Creating Successful Mailing Lists
Direct Mailers say that the quality of a mailing list is at least 40% of the campaign’s success.
Here are some ways to create a successful mailing list.

  1. Identify your customers
Mail to people who are your best customers. Before looking for a list, look at your own records; keep invoices, sales slips, and delivery addresses. Look for the people who bought from you most recently, most often, and spent the most money.
  2. Understand your model customer
You have identified who your best customers are; now you need to find out what they have in common. If you own a neighborhood business, you may find that most of your customers live within four miles from your business. In this case, you could purchase a list that targets prospects geographically.

You could also find out how old your customers are or what kind of cars they drive. Let’s say that your best customers are 27-38 year old females and drive Chevy Cavaliers. With that information, you can purchase a list with prospects just like them. Once you know your model customer, you can tailor a mailing list that will attract more customers with the same qualities (i.e. new mothers or animal shelter donors).
  3. Find more model customers
Mapping is another effective method used to find more model customers. With mapping you can analyze which zip codes your customers live in. If you find that you are mailing to zip codes where you have a fewer customers, then stop. Try only mail to the areas where you have the most customers.
